Submission Guidelines

Adult Trade Books

Sierra Club Books publishes nonfiction books on the natural world and environmental topics for a broad general audience. Within this subject area we are interested in popular works of natural history, lively and accessible reportage on important environmental issues and stories, personal narratives with strong literary merit, philosophical explorations of humankind's bond with the natural world, and books about living sustainably on the Earth.

Currently we publish very few pictorial or photographic books, and even fewer works of fiction; however, we may consider such projects based on a query letter and sample materials. Please note special guidelines below on submitting photos or artwork.

General submission guidelines:

  • We prefer to receive proposals consisting of a narrative description, an outline, some sample text, and preliminary market research.
  • We will return materials only if a self-addressed, stamped envelope is enclosed.
  • If you are not sure whether your project suits our list, please send a query letter in advance of a full proposal.
  • E-mail submissions will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made.
  • For illustrated projects: All visual material must be sent in printed form (color copies or prints) or as duplicate transparencies; no digital media will be accepted.
  • Do not send original manuscripts, artwork, transparencies, or disks.
  • Please allow up to three months for a response.
