Together we've sent nearly 50,000 messages to the Senate calling for action to implement the recommendations of the Oil Spill Commission to restore the Gulf Coast and prevent future catastrophes.

But some Big Oil friends in Congress are claiming that the oil industry can't afford these common sense safeguards. Well, the Big Oil companies released their quarterly profit reports this week, and guess what? Big Oil can afford it.

Exxon Mobil, the world's largest oil company, reported a 53% increase in quarterly profits. Chevron's profits rose 72%. And even BP, despite the disaster in the Gulf, posted earnings of $4.6 billion, up 33% from the same quarter last year.

Call your U.S. senators and tell them to hold Big Oil accountable by acting on the Oil Spill Commission's recommendations.

Check out our talking points:

  1. Some Big Oil friends are claiming that the oil industry cannot afford the common sense recommendations from the Oil Spill Commission, but the quarterly profit reports released this week show otherwise. Profits for Exxon were up 53% from the same time last year, and profits for Chevron rose over 72%.

  2. It is time for regulatory reforms that increase environmental and safety protections, while also strengthening industry accountability, to prevent future oil drilling disasters on U.S. coasts.

  3. It is time to give Gulf Coast residents a voice in oil industry decisions by establishing a Gulf of Mexico Regional Citizens Advisory Council.

  4. And it is time to ensure that the Gulf Coast has the necessary resources for restoration by directing that 80 percent of Clean Water Act fines from the BP disaster must be used for ecological restoration in the Gulf Coast, where a Public Advisory Committee will have a say in their use.

  5. Will the senator support a bill that implements these recommendations from the Oil Spill Commission?
