Tell Your Legislators: No Billion Dollar Bailouts for Mississippi Power's Dirty, Unnecessary Coal Plant

They're trying to pull another fast one in the Mississippi Legislature.

Lobbyists and Legislators alike are trying to railroad through a deal that would bail out Mississippi Power's failing Kemper County Coal Plant, a boondoggle that is already busting its budget and projected to raise electric rates 61 percent.

So like a lot of Fortune 500 companies, when they make a mistake, Mississippi Power is asking the legislature to write them a blank check, payable by the company's customers. But we're on to their game.

With Mississippi Power trying to railroad this bill through, the vote could happen as early as today. The only hope we have to stop this is to get the speaker of the House and the lieutenant governor to hit the brakes and pull the bills off the House and Senate calendars.

Make your call today, and tell the Lt. Governor and Speaker no bailouts for dirty and unnecessary coal.

Call Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves at 1-601-359-3200.

Call Speaker of the House Philip Gunn at 1-601-359-3300.

Talking points:

  • I object to SB 2755 and HB 1134 coming up for a vote.
  • Mississippi families can’t afford a billion dollar tax that will result in higher electric bills and neither can our economy.
  • The Kemper Power Plant is an expensive and unnecessary boondoggle which will raise electric rates 61 percent.
  • This bill puts the financial interests of a Fortune 500 Company and their investors first and the taxpayers and ratepayers in Mississippi last.

After the call, please let us know how your call went and what you learned.
