Sierra Club Urges Senate to Confirm Solis for Labor Secretary
Washington, DC: Statement of Sierra Club Executive Director, Carl Pope.
"On behalf of Sierra Club's 1.3 million members and supporters we strongly urge the Senate to move as quickly as possible to confirm Congresswoman Hilda Solis for Secretary of Labor. Enough is enough--allowing her to get to work is a vital part of President Obama's bold plan for America's economic recovery and a clean energy future.
"Rep. Solis has been a tireless advocate for environmental issues, environmental justice, and worker's rights. She was one of the earliest and most vocal supporters of green jobs in the House of Representatives. We can think of no better person to help President Obama implement his plans for an economic recovery fueled by the creation of millions of new green jobs. Rep. Solis also understands that green jobs must also be good jobs and has worked to make sure that the clean energy economy is one that lifts up all workers."
"One of our top legislative priorities is passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. We are very pleased that a strong supporter of this essential legislation has been tapped to head up the Department of Labor. Her support for this bill as well as her profound understanding of the intersection of clean energy and good jobs only makes her an even better choice for this position. At a time when workers and our environment both need help, Hilda Solis is the leader we need."
