(1) Global Warming: Modeling Reality 2006 was the warmest year on record for the U.S. according to government scientists, who noted that each of the last nine years are among the 25 warmest years on record in the U.S., with eight of the last 10 years being the warmest on record worldwide. The scientists also found that rising temperature trends of recent years closely align with predictions of computerized climate models, which predict among other consequences, severe droughts, rising sea levels and melting ice caps. (2) EPA: Arrival of Accountability Congress has announced plans to scrutinize recent EPA policy changes that have given polluting industries a break at the cost of pubic health. Top on the agenda for the Feb. 1 hearing is a look into EPA's adoption of new rules supported by the coal industry, which would allow coal plants to avoid installing modern pollution control equipment. The hearing will also bring to light other recent industry-driven decisions that the agency has tried to slip under the nose of the American public Learn more about the threats to our air. (3) Take Action: Stop Big Oil Payoffs! With the elections well behind us, it is time to start making changes! On January 18th the new Congress will vote on a bill to create a multi-billion dollar fund for new investment in clean energy by rolling back subsidies for Big Oil. Now is our chance to end the corrupting influence of Big Oil on Congress, decrease our dependence on oil and move ourselves into a cleaner energy future. End Big Oil giveaways- Move to a cleaner energy future! (4) Take Action: Improve the State of the Union! In last year's State of the Union address, President Bush admitted that our country has an oil addiction. So far, he has done nothing about it. With a new Congress in place, the President has a clear opportunity to get serious about kicking our oil habit and to take real steps to combat global warming Help us send a message to the President before his next State of the Union Address on January 23.
