The Senate is poised to take action on global warming sometime soon and the House is working to develop its own policy solutions. The global warming policy we set must be effective and sustainable, as well-designed global warming policy will mean a healthier planet and a more stable economy.
It seems that Congress is getting the message that global warming is real so, in response, support is being encouraged for the “Principles for Global Warming Legislation,” introduced by Representatives Waxman (D-CA-30), Markey (D-MA-7) and Inslee (D-WA-1). The principles establish a blueprint for fair and effective global warming policy that would set strong science-based targets for reducing global warming emissions while strengthening our economy and supporting workers and vulnerable communities.
The principles will be sent in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Encourage your representatives to endorse the principles letter!
The Kansas Coal Battle
Last week marked a real showdown in the Kansas State Legislature and the battle has run over into this week. The debate over two proposed Sunflower coal-fired power plants is taking center-stage as those for coal tried to override Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ veto of the plants.
Coal is one of the most polluting sources of energy available, jeopardizing our health and our environment. Coal-fired power plants emit almost 40% of the United States’ annual carbon dioxide emissions, making them a major contributor to global warming.
Gov. Sebelius' veto came after pro-coal legislators ignored Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Rod Bremby’s Oct. 2007 denial of air-quality permits for the plants (he cited "concerns that carbon dioxide from the plants would exacerbate climate change and threaten human health.").
Despite falling short of enough override votes several times, some lawmakers continue trying to force the plants' approval over and over via various bills. The Climate and Energy Project is live-blogging all the statehouse action, so check it out to stay on top of the fight!

News: Major Arctic Sea Ice Melt Expected This Summer
The Arctic will remain on thinning ice, and global warming is expected to begin affecting the Antarctic as well, scientists said in an Associated Press article on May 2.
Read more about this recent study where one formerly skeptical scientist called the results "startling."
