SIERRA CLUB FOUNDATION BRINGS ON MOVIE PRODUCER TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SAN FRANCISCO – The Sierra Club Foundation is pleased
to announce that Marc Weiss, creator of the celebrated PBS series P.O.V. and
climate activist, has joined the Board of Directors.
As a
member of the board, Weiss will play an active role on several board
committees, serve as an advisor to various Club initiatives, and expand the
fundraising base in the New York City metro area. Most recently, Weiss was asked to help lead
the Sierra Club's Obama Climate Legacy Project, a 100 day action plan designed
to encourage President Obama to lead on climate in his second term.
Weiss has been an activist and leader in the
independent, alternative media movement for more than 40 years, first as a
filmmaker and journalist, then as a co-founder of several key organizations. Creator of the public television series
P.O.V., the award-winning documentary series now completing its 25th season on
PBS, and founder of Web Lab, an online laboratory that has been recognized for
its pioneering use of the Internet to engage a wide range of people on social
issues, and most recently Executive Producer of “A Fierce Green Fire,” a sweeping history of the
environmental movement that will open theatrically in March, Weiss is turning
his attention to climate change and the environment.
“Marc is a doer and brings a unique skillset to the
Foundation,” said Foundation Executive Director Peter Martin. “As a filmmaker,
journalist, organizer, innovator and activist, his energy and passion engaging
people on social issues is exactly what the Foundation needs as we continue to
preserve the natural and human environment and move towards a clean energy
future.”
Weiss said, “As the father of two teenagers, I feel an incredible
sense of urgency to reverse the climate crisis that threatens the future of
their generation. “I’m excited to shift my focus and help build a movement that
can force change at the scale required to reverse the course we’re on.”
