Sierra Club Launches 2012 Web Voter Guide
Washington, D.C. --
Today, the Sierra Club launched its 2012 Web Voter Guide to help voters
concerned about public health and environmental issues cut through the election
noise and get the facts on candidates in their district. The online
resource features an interactive map of key congressional races, searchable by
state and issue focus.
“There’s
information flying at us from every angle now, and it’s getting harder and
harder to separate reality from rhetoric, especially in this new environment
that gives deep-pocketed oil and coal interests the biggest megaphones in their
attempt to hijack this election,” said Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive
Director.
In
the first three months of this year alone, 81 percent of the attack ads backed
by fossil fuel interests who are against President Obama were on energy and
environment issues. Analysts expect the total dollars spent in this election
will surpass a record $7 billion before all is said and done.
“Fortunately,
few Americans agree with these Big Oil and Coal CEOs -- no matter how much
money they spend to flood our airwaves. There are millions more of us who are
motivated to protect our air and water, create a thriving clean energy
economy with new American jobs, and build a healthy and safe future for our
kids,” Brune said. “The good news is there are plenty of
candidates running in this election who share those values, and the Sierra Club
Voter Guide will help voters determine who those candidates are and who stands
with big polluters.”
The
initial launch of the Sierra Club voter guide includes a first wave of races
featuring candidates endorsed by the Club. In the coming weeks, more House and
Senate races will be added.
