The Sock Puppet Primary: Sierra Club Launches “Real Republicans” Project
New initiative digs through the sock drawer to expose extreme positions of primary candidates
Manchester, N.H. — Today, on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, the Sierra Club’s Voter Education Fund unveiled its Real Republicans primary project, the first major effort by an environmental organization to fight back against the stream of misinformation scapegoating clean air, clean water, and public health safeguards and the agencies that implement them.
The mission of the Real Republicans project is to educate voters about the records of the candidates for the 2012 GOP nomination by highlighting their extreme positions on issues of critical importance to the American people and encourage the public to find out more about the candidates and their positions on these issues.
In addition to the new realrepubs.com website, the project will include a series of videos featuring the candidates’ actual words coming from the mouths of sock puppets uncannily designed in their likenesses.
“All of the candidates in the Republican primary have turned their backs on the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the health of American families to pander to their deep-pocketed puppet masters and the most extreme elements of their party,” said Tony Cani, the Sierra Club’s National Political Director. “The American people deserve to know the candidates’ real priorities, and this project will help expose their reckless agenda for what it really is.”
Contrary to the reckless rhetoric of the primary frontrunners, more than 75% of Americans support the mission of the Environmental Protection Agency. The first video in the “Real Republicans” series contrasts the dangerous political assault on the EPA with the reality of the public’s strong support for that agency’s mission.
The Sierra Club Voter Education Fund is also taking out online advertising in New Hampshire news outlets and on Facebook for the Real Republicans launch. More videos and initiatives are planned as the Republican presidential primary continues.
