Grassroots Activism: Fighting Coal Mining in Illinois
Sierra Club Water Sentinels in Illinois are fighting coal mining on all fronts. Working in coalition with groups such as the Prairie Rivers Network, Citizens Against Longwall Mining, and Heartland Coalfield Alliance, the activists are attending trainings and learning how to make sure coal companies follow the rules as they expand into the Land of Lincoln. Grassroots Activism: Pollution Is Personal
Karen Monahan is a Sierra Club environmental justice organizer and vice chair of the Minneapolis NAACP. She took to the Sierra Club's Compass blog this week to talk about attending the NAACP Clean Air Conference and just how personal air and water pollution can get. It's so "personal, in fact, that it can be overwhelming to see how obvious it is that clean air can literally save lives," says Monahan. |
