Take Action: We Can't Trust Big Oil
On July 2nd, an Exxon pipeline ruptured, sending up to 42,000 gallons of oil spewing into the Yellowstone River in Montana. Since then, we've learned that the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued a warning letter to Exxon in the years prior to the spill, and concerns were raised by local officials in the months preceding the disaster. Moreover, federal regulators admitted that the pipeline may have carried tar sands oil, which has a higher risk of leaks due to its corrosive nature. Tell Congress we need strong pipeline safety regulations to protect our land and water from oil disasters. |

Delivering Mercury Safeguard Comments to the EPA
Today, a crowd of concerned citizens gathered in Boston outside the EPA Region 1 office to deliver more than 639,000 comments calling for strong mercury safeguards. These comments, collected from every state in the nation, support the EPA in its efforts to curb dangerous mercury pollution from coal-fired power plants. A coalition of more than 200 health, environmental, and social-justice organizations -- including the Sierra Club -- worked together to make this impressive show of support possible. |

Military Families Outdoors: Event Brings Together Hundreds
The Sierra Club joined UpaDowna of the Pike's Peak Community Foundation this month to celebrate two of Colorado's greatest resources: the outdoors and its strong military community. The Celebration of the Military Child Outside brought more than 20 outdoor recreation and conservation organizations together with nearly 400 military kids, families, and friends to the America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs. Speakers from the Sierra Club, the National Military Family Association, and campers from Operation Purple® camps shared their experiences with the crowd, and kids enjoyed activities such as kayaking and rock climbing. |
