1) Take Action: Protect the Arctic for Another 50 Years
There are just 50 days until the Arctic Refuge's 50th Anniversary. Located in northeastern Alaska, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of America's most spectacular natural treasures. Its coastal plain serves as the region's biological heart.
Help ensure that future generations will also be able to experience and enjoy this last great wilderness.
2) Take Action: Build a Clean Energy Economy, Move Beyond Oil
Our country needs to move beyond oil to build a new clean energy economy. A national plan to support the rapid, widespread deployment of plug-in electric vehicles will help move our country beyond oil, and a strong and clean renewable electricity standard will create new jobs and stimulate the economy.
Urge your senators to support these critical policies this year!
In a courageous move, the Environmental Protection Agency has recommended that the mining permit for the nation's largest mountaintop removal coal mine be withdrawn. The Spruce No. 1 mine in Logan County, West Virginia, would destroy thousands of acres of land, bury seven miles of streams and end a way of life for many Appalachian families.
The recommendation sends a clear signal about the Obama administration's commitment to the people of Appalachia.
4) BP Disaster: Six Months Later
Six months out from the worst environmental calamity in history, the BP oil disaster has proved beyond a doubt that offshore drilling is dangerous, no matter what the oil industry says. The Gulf Coast region is still reeling from the devastation, struggling with massive job losses in the fishing and tourism industries, and suffering from a natural eco-system threatened by the remaining oil and toxic dispersants.
Tomorrow, Gulf Coast communities will gather to urge Congress to stand up to Big Oil and make much needed reforms.
