1) Take Action: Support EPA Work to Save Lives
Thousands of lives could be saved by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rule that aims to reduce air pollution linked to cancer, birth defects, and other serious illnesses. But since the rule was proposed last June, industry lobbyists have been fighting hard to kill it. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) is now circulating a letter in the U.S. House of Representatives that asks members to support this effort by the EPA to cut dangerous air pollution and protect our lungs.
Please contact your representative and urge them to sign on to this important letter.
2) Take Action: Drive away from oil
Our changing climate, the hundreds of billions of dollars sent overseas to pay for imported oil, and the devastated shores of the Gulf and the Kalamazoo River demand that we have a plan to break our oil dependence. The EPA has announced that 60 mpg in 2025 is not only possible, it will save consumers money and reduce our dependence on oil. There is no reason to aim lower.
3) Wind: Huge Potential Offshore
A new study from the Department of Energy (pdf) shows that developing offshore wind has the potential to meet all U.S. energy needs. Such development could create 43,000 jobs, reduce air pollution and help the country get 20% of its energy from wind by 2030-a major step in the fight against global climate disruption. The U.S. leads the world in land-based wind capacity. Now it's time for America to continue our leadership offshore.
4) Youth: Serve Outdoors
Just one month ago Sierra Club members, partners and supporters turned out at over 100 Serve Outdoors events in 36 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Together, they honored the spirit of those who serve our county every day and emphasized the importance of volunteerism in strengthening our communities and protecting our environment.
Check out the video from this youth-led project and be inspired to continue to serve outdoors.
