International Study Tour to Ethiopia
The Global Population and Environment Program is currently accepting applications for our July 2010 study tour to Ethiopia. Ethiopian women have on average 5.3 births (TFR) and less than 6 per cent of births are delivered by skilled attendants. Ethiopia has made significant gains in girls' enrollment in primary and secondary school and in raising the average age at marriage, but has among the highest levels of unmet need for contraception in Africa.
Increasing population growth has accelerated land degradation as forests are converted to farms, more people seek firewood, and more families are forced to use unsustainable methods to eke out a living on marginal lands. Ethiopia's widespread forests are disappearing and may be eradicated entirely by 2030.
Click here to find out more about being a study tour participant. Sierra Club's Global Population and Environment Program will cover the cost of airfare and in-country ground transportation, hotel lodging and meals. Students are encouraged to apply. Please submit applications to Sandeep Bathala at sandeep.bathala@sierraclub.org by Sunday, May 17, 2010.
