Sierra Club Currents - Sierra Students Break the Addiction Quote of Note: "Don't touch me." -- Karl Rove gets angry while discussing global warming with Sheryl Crow over dinner. (1) Victory: Sierra Students Break the Addiction (2) Gulf Coast: Arbor Day of Action (3) Take Action: Extend Energy Efficiency (4) Take Action: Save the Endangered Species Act (1) Victory: Sierra Students Break the Addiction Sierra Student Coalition organizer Katherine McEachern was recognized yesterday with MTV's Break the Addiction Challenge Award for her work to make Cornell University climate neutral. She plans to use the award prize money to continue her work by giving Cornell's campus center an eco-friendly makeover. Katherine and students across the country are doing their part to fight global warming, now its time for our leaders to step up and do their part to implement real global warming solutions and put us on a path to a clean energy future. Find out how you can break the addiction. (2) Gulf Coast: Arbor Day of Action Citizens and groups throughout the Gulf Coast region are calling on Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowe's to celebrate this Arbor Day by saving cypress trees and halting the sale of cypress mulch. Cypress forests are the Gulf's best natural storm surge and flooding protection and important habitat for birds and wildlife. Despite the availability of cheaper, safer alternatives many cypress forests are still being clear-cut to provide garden mulch, needlessly putting Gulf Coast communities at risk. (3) Take Action: Extend Energy Efficiency Increasing our nation's energy efficiency is good for our economy and good for our environment. Now is the time to move quickly and decisively to reduce our use of fossil fuels by extending tax incentives for energy efficiency. Making buildings more efficient will reduce electricity and natural gas use in our homes and offices, and reduce need for expensive new power plants. Energy efficiency is the quickest, cleanest, and cheapest way to fight global warming. Tell your Senator to cosponsor the Energy Efficiency Incentives Act! (4) Take Action: Save the Endangered Species Act Recent leaks from government employees have revealed that the Bush Administration is attempting to re-write the Endangered Species Act through regulations. Almost every aspect of the law will be affected, essentially gutting the Act and leaving threatened game and wildlife vulnerable to extinction. Congress needs to take back their power to write and change laws from the Administration and stop this attack on the Endangered Species Act. Tell your Congressman that it's time to send the Administration a message- Save the Endangered Species Act! |
