Today you have an opportunity to protect Washington families from the dirty and dangerous TransAlta coal plant. The
Washington State Senate has introduced a bill that will protect our
families from the damaging health effects of the TransAlta coal plant by
accelerating the phase-out of coal burning at the plant. The
legislation will also ensure a fair and planned transition beyond coal
for the community. Our legislators need to hear from you about the
importance of protecting our health and environment from dirty coal. Urge Senator Rockefeller to stand firm against coal!

Stand Firm Against Coal
Dear Senator Rockefeller,
Thank you for your leadership in working to end coal pollution in Washington state. The nearly 40 year-old TransAlta coal plant is our largest single source of toxic mercury, air and climate pollution. Our state is at a crossroads, and we need to ensure a healthy transition from coal. I believe it is fair for TransAlta to pay a decommissioning fee to cover the costs of cleaning up the polluted land and water it leaves behind. Providing funding to make job-creating investments in the local community makes good sense. As we bring this plant into compliance with our state's pollution-reducing Emissions Performance Standard, it will help us achieve our climate goals. In our community, we are making substantial investments to decrease our energy use through energy efficiency. This will prevent a new substation from being built, and help us reduce our reliance on coal. This is the right direction for our state to be going in as well.
