Tell Gov. Crist: We Need a Strong Plan to Reduce Plastic Bags

Plastic shopping bags, often used once then thrown away, use up natural resources, consume energy to manufacture, create litter, endanger wildlife, add to landfill waste, impact human health and take forever to disappear. Tell Governor Charlie Crist you want an aggressive plan for reducing plastic bags.

Please Ask DEP to Propose an Aggressive Plan to Reduce Plastic Bag Use

Dear [Decision Maker],

I urge you to intervene and ask Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Director Michael Sole to resurrect DEP's report recommending adoption of an aggressive state plan to reduce plastic shopping bags.

We must stop wasting petroleum for single use products like plastic bags that get used an average of 12 minutes before being discarded. Americans use 60,000 plastic bags every 5 seconds. Most end up in the trash contributing to global warming pollution in the landfill or in our oceans endangering wildlife. Hundreds of thousands of marine mammals die every year from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food.

Reducing waste offers an enormous opportunity to combat global warming, protect our wildlife, and prevent litter. Please ask DEP to propose an agressive plan to reduce plastic bag use.

Sincerely,
