Stop the Illiana Tollway
Dear local, regional, and state leaders of Illinois and Indiana,
The Illiana Tollway will be a major economic burden to taxpayers, is inconsistent with the region's plan, will negatively impact the agricultural economy of Will County Illinois and Lake County Indiana, and will destroy globally rare native habitats and public land. I oppose the proposed Illiana Tollway and urge local and state leaders to reject the Illiana proposal due to these major concerns:Economic Boondoggle - The Illiana is a 47-mile road cutting through rural Will County into Indiana with a price tag of $1.3 BILLION for high tolls with few users. The state of Illinois is proposing to guarantee payments to the road's private builders at a time when the state's limited funds should be going to maintain and improve existing roads and transit. Similar privately-funded roads have failed when revenue has not met expectations due to underuse caused by driver avoidance of high tolls and unrealistic projections of anticipated use. Harms Local Communities - The proposed route would destroy thousands of acres of prime farmland. The project will ultimately result in over 40 relocations for farms and homes, including centennial farms, stripping people of their land and their job. Traffic to the Illiana will also disturb the peace and interfere with funeral processions at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Destroys Important Natural Resources and Public Land - The Illiana will pollute the Kankakee River watershed, degrading clean drinking water supplies. The Illiana will also impact the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, our nation's first national tallgrass prairie where a herd of over a hundred bison will be relocated, putting Will County on the map as an ecotourism destination. The Illiana toll road with its noise, lights, and pollution will ruin people's outdoor experiences at the prairie and be harmful to the unique plants and animals found there, many of which are endangered. I urge you to help stop the wasteful Illiana Tollway mistake, and instead invest our public dollars in existing communities, expanding transit, protecting open space, and maintaining our current road infrastructure. Achieving these goals is critical to our quality of life and our future.
