commend President Obama for confronting this critical issue. Illinois has seen
the devastating impacts of severe weather first-hand with 11 natural disasters
over the past five years. Moving toward a cleaner, more reliable and resilient
energy system will bring significant benefits to our communities and our state.” Illinois Governor Pat Quinn
On June 2nd, President Barack Obama's Administration proposed the first-ever safeguards against carbon pollution from our nation's aging power plants. The proposal calls for a 30% reduction of carbon pollution from aging power plants by 2030. On the first day, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn expressed his support and noted that climate disruption has resulted in 11 natural disasters in the last 5 years, and touted the many benefits that clean energy can bring to Illinois. This is a big deal, and the big polluters know it. Obama’s Climate Action Plan depends on states like Illinois to create clean power plans that move use beyond fossil fuels to renewable energy and conservation. Many Governors are standing with big coal, and planning lawsuits instead of clean power plans.
Thank Governor Quinn today for standing for climate action. This is the beginning of what could be the biggest climate fight in history. Fossil fuel billionaires like the Koch Brothers are mobilizing like never before. Illinois coal lobbyists are still denying the science of climate change and trying to block this plan.
Fortunately, we know there is a better way. We can meet the goals outlined by stepping up our use of renewables and energy efficiency measures. Don't let the climate deniers and the fossil fuel billionaires get the last word. Make sure Governor Quinn knows you support his efforts to address climate change here in Illinois.
