Fossil Free Rhode Island!

With more coastline per square mile than any other state, Rhode Island suffers disproportionately from the worsening reality of climate change. Ocean acidification, sea level rise and extreme weather events have already taken a heavy toll on our communities, and these damages will multiply unless carbon emissions are abated. We must act now to avoid catastrophe.

On June 20th, the Providence City Council acted and overwhelmingly passed a divestment resolution acknowledging the council’s “moral obligation to ensure that no public money is being used to promote industries or practices that harm the health and well being of the people [...] that its investments should support a sustainable future where all people can live healthy lives without the negative impacts of a warming environment."

The State of Rhode Island has the same obligation to act.

Individuals, governments, corporations, universities, and religious institutions have successfully used divestment to create positive social change.  Indeed, as President Obama exhorted in his June 2013 address on climate change, “push your own communities to adopt smarter practices. Invest. Divest. Remind folks there's no contradiction between a sound environment and strong economic growth.

We, the People of Rhode Island, urge our leaders to divest all state funds from fossil fuels to protect our future.

Be Responsible, Please Divest from Fossil Fuels

Dear [Decision Maker],

With more coastline per square mile than any other state, Rhode Island suffers disproportionately from the worsening reality of climate change. Ocean acidification, sea level rise and extreme weather events have already taken a heavy toll on our communities, and these damages will multiply unless carbon emissions are abated. We must act now to avoid catastrophe.

On June 20th, the Providence City Council acted and overwhelmingly passed a divestment resolution acknowledging the council's "moral obligation to ensure that no public money is being used to promote industries or practices that harm the health and well being of the people [...] that its investments should support a sustainable future where all people can live healthy lives without the negative impacts of a warming environment."

The State of Rhode Island has the same obligation to act.

Individuals, governments, corporations, universities, and religious institutions have successfully used divestment to create positive social change. Indeed, as President Obama exhorted in his June 2013 address on climate change, "push your own communities to adopt smarter practices. Invest. Divest. Remind folks there's no contradiction between a sound environment and strong economic growth."

We, the People of Rhode Island, urge our leaders to divest all state funds from fossil fuels to protect our future.

Sincerely,
