For more than two years, we have witnessed the dismantling of environmental programs in the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Under former DEP Secretary Michael Krancer, DEP has changed its mission from Environmental Protection to Expedited Permitting. The agency has put in place policies that give political appointees in Harrisburg the ability to veto compliance actions of its field inspectors. Enforcement has plummeted. Important data about pollution is being withheld from people whose wells have been contaminated by gas drilling. The high-level office that promoted renewable energy has been downgraded and DEP has stopped promoting clean energy.

CALL ON GOVERNOR  TO APPOINT A DEP SECRETARY WHO IS COMMITTED TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

As Superstorm Sandy taught us, climate disruption has severe consequences. And Pennsylvania is a major greenhouse gas emitter, releasing more than 46 other states. Only California and Texas emit more. Fossil fuels like coal and natural gas are the primary culprits.

Between 2005 and 2010, Pennsylvania started on a path to reduce our use of fossil fuels, adopting requirements to expand the use of renewable energy and efficiency. But when Governor Corbett and Secretary Krancer took over, that momentum stopped, and is now being rolled back. Secretary Krancer refused to acknowledge that human actions are causing climate change or that Pennsylvania needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, the Corbett Administration policies promote an expansion of fossil fuels, using taxpayer subsidies to expand natural gas use in PA.

TAKE ACTION  TELL GOVERNOR CORBETT TO APPOINT A DEP SECRETARY WHO ACKNOWLEDGES THE DANGERS OF CLIMATE DISRUPTION, AND WILL PROMOTE POLICIES THAT REDUCE, NOT INCREASE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Thank you for everything you do, every day, to help protect the planet.

Sincerely,

Jeff Schmidt, Director
Sierra Club PA Chapter
